Ah - there's now some options in that widget so that you can show/ hide the widget on whatever page you like. Check out the widget options and hopefully you can make it display properly again

Ben,

when I updated my site to the latest build you recommended (to get the custom avatar working), the post author details widget stopped showing up on my pages again. :/

Is the code you put up that time not in the latest version I downloaded?

This is crazy - it seems to be a constant bug in the WordPress upload system. I am now building my own upload system into the theme so that I don't have to try to support their code. Will release it this weekend.

Thanks for the expanded explanation.

For me the most important thing is that everything works again ... but I hate mysteries. If you ever do figure it out (with me, the answer to these kinds of problems usually pops up late at night, seven to eight weeks later, when nobody cares anymore), think of me and let me know. :)

By the way: I also added a dynamic table to the middle of that page via a nifty plugin (yeah, I know, I shouldn't) called "WP-Table Reloaded" ... that one, with all its script magic, didn't harm the page either.

:)

Hoorah - I'm really glad it's all sorted out now.

I'm not entirely sure why the problem happened. It seems the global WordPress variable $post was being reset to just the post id and not the entire post data. This meant that once it finished displaying the comments everything got messed up. It didn't even know there were comments, or what post it was on, so was unable to display who the author is. I can't work out why this problem was limited to a single page. I would have thought it would either happen everywhere or nowhere - it still doesn't make sense to me but I have a fix now so I'm happy :)

I am trying to add a custom header to my Mimbo Pro installation. Step 1 page comes up and allows me to select my image but the Step 2 page is completely blank. When I do a view source on the page, it looks like it is starting to load the page but stops for some reason. Has anyone else run into this problem and if so, what was your solution?

I think it's all fixed now. If you could test it and confirm that would be great. Originally I removed the problem code (it was an error with the command current_user_can) but I have now found a really simple way around the problem so all the functionality is back again.

OK

Bad news ... (and last post for today, promise).

The problem must be related to Elemental.
I'll send you a quick support request.

You can read up on the problem here. There should me more than enough info.

I turned off all the plugins on my site besides one which put my site into maintenance mode.

I then tested 5 different themes where none of these problems described above occur.
I can post comments on the "Mosaics Discography" page, I can add, rename or do whatever with the page.

When I switch back to Elemental, the same problems turn up again.

Conclusion (just some noob thoughts):

a) Either you are using the words from the title of that page (Mosaic, Discographies) which were on the previous now gone pages that had a different slug and keeping those words in an array or variable somewhere that then goes haywire, or
b) something is cached somewhere that makes the theme think that the new page is in fact the old deleted page.

That's all I can come up with.

Sorry.

OK, I've given up.

No matter how much deletions and recreations of pages I do in the DB, there must be a relational part somewhere else that as soon as I use the word Mosaic or Discography in the title immediately screws everything up. As far as I can tell, it is still connected to the long gone original announcement post of which there is no reference in the wp_posts table.

As soon as I create a new page that has a different slug and a different title, now "Download Mosaic Discographies", everything is fine until I post a comment. The page comment section is locked down and the "Post Author" widget disappears.

To me that means that as soon as either of those two words mentioned above are used, some part of WP or the Theme pulls that name and somehow manages to misinterpret what it is and somehow connects it to the old id-401 post which is gone from the wp_posts table.

Absolutely baffeling.

The most obvious symptom that sth is wrong is that when I post a test comment and reload the page, the comment form disappears. That signals to me that it is still connected somehow to that old announcement post because I turned off commenting there for debugging reasons before I deleted it. So, I create a new page, look at it once and it works, post a comment and ... boom ... Wordpress apparently partially connects it to the old post. Partially, because the ID and the title are still in place. But the backend sees things differently without throwing up a single error or giving any indication what's going on. It's just that a few central elements don't work.

I also made sure that there are no cache elements anywhere (WP-Super Cache was enabled once on my site a few days ago), but I can't for the life of me really understand what's happening.

Unfortunately I also don't have any time these next few days and my most important page is offline (I've had over 100.000 downloads from that page in a a little over two months).

That.
Sucks.

IMHO, this also a WP problem, because many people must be stupid enough to do what I did (post and page with the same name and slug) and then there is absolutely no way for an average user to fix that without massive help and a solid understanding of the relational base of WP.

I won't be able to fix this without that help and I have no time to look for that these next days.

Zzzzzzz

Thought so.
It happend again.
Updating the earlier announcement post tied it automatically to the page again and screwed everything up.
What an utterly stupid system.
Now I have to hunt around every table after I have deleted that stupid announcement post for good (although it had a different ID, different slug AND different title) and see how I can fix it once more. At least now I know what I'm looking for.

Can't say that this isn't fun in some perverse way.

OK, here we go.

Several problems collided (plus solutions):

Numero uno:
I had a post AND a page which ended up having the same slug and title. Weeks before, I had written a post announcing this "Mosaic Discographies" project and guess which title I gave that one? Right. The same I then gave to the page later on. Add to that my two slug revisions on the later page and Wordpress started behaving like Windows Vista 32bit (my 64bit system never burped once). :)

Numero two-o:
I had a million revisions and autosaves (I HATE that system, but don't dare turn it off ... it has saved me before) that were tagged on to the old page that I had tried to change, meaning the new page had automatically been given a new ID and slug, but the post parent was still the old shite (that was NOT my fault). Go figure. Something in their autoupdate/revision system that I completely threw off track, I guess. It didn't notice that the ID had changed and gave it the old one in the post parent field.

Numero three-o
a) I changed the older post title to be able to identify what I was looking at in my database.
b) I deleted all revisions/updates and other cr*p associated with that post.
c) Step one completed. Only that one single instance of the early announcement post left.
d) I deleted any reference to any version, revision or autoupdate of the former Mosaic Discographies page(s).
e) Step two completed. Not a single reference in the wp_post table anymore.
f) I recreated the page which was automatically given the slug "mosaic-discographies-2" (that means there is still some reference to the original in some other table) and filled it with a backup of the HTML I had saved.
g) Bingo! "Page Author" widget shows.

Now I just have to wait if some orphaned reference to the old page(s) in some other table gets stuck to my new page again via some automatic something or rather. But so far, updating the page has not done any harm.

My last test, before I got to bed, is to leave the post open for a while and let WP do it's autosave dance two or three times. BTW: Although I know that there are plugins to keep the number of autosaves down or turn them off altogether, I - in total - deleted up to 500 automatically generated autosaves for those screwed up pages. That's just too much. Times that - for a bigger site than mine - with a couple of thousand posts for which the author has to take cigarette breaks every five minutes while writing it and then revising it in the same manner many times down the road, and we're talking tens of thousand of superfluous database entries without a built-in way of reducing them down to the last ten. Duh.

Thank God for Wordpress ... and Microsoft.
Without them, life would be totally boring.

Summary: Mostly my fault for being the dumbest possible user, partly Wordpress' fault for being dumb (and updated too often instead of it being given time to grow) and last, but not least, the great unknown that is the digital thin air of online publishing life.

"Elemental" had absolutely no part in it.

Ha!
VICTORY!

:)
